This pilot study investigates the potential of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in diagnosing sarcopenia in older adults in the Emergency Department (ED). Researchers recruited 60 patients over the age of 65 and measured the thickness of their femoral quadriceps using POCUS, along with assessing grip strength and gait speed. The study found that 50% of participants exhibited signs of sarcopenia, with a statistically significant correlation between muscle thickness measured by ultrasound and functional performance. These findings suggest that POCUS could be a valuable tool for falls prevention and management in this vulnerable population, although further research is necessary to validate these results on a larger scale.
