WIRELESS PROBE REVOLUTIONIZES CENTRAL VENOUS ACCESS

Summary

The study discusses the preliminary experience with a novel ultrasound (US) device equipped with a wireless linear transducer, designed for US-guided procedures during central venous access device (VAD) placements. The system, Acuson Freestyle by Siemens, comprises a 5-13 MHz linear probe connected wirelessly to a compact device.

The wireless transducer can be enclosed in a sterile cover for maximal barrier precautions during procedures. The device was utilized in 38 consecutive VAD placements, including peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs), ports, and cuffed-tunneled catheters. The wireless system demonstrated successful venepunctures, excellent image quality, and ease of handling.

The wireless connectivity provided flexibility, freedom of movement, and adherence to infection control recommendations, suggesting its potential utility in US-guided procedures.
