The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine is rapidly expanding, with increasing interest in its potential to improve patient care beyond clinical outcomes, particularly in patient education. This pilot study aimed to validate an AI-generated patient information video (PIV) for partial nephrectomy (PN) as a tool for enhancing preoperative counseling and reducing patient anxiety. The PIV was created using commercial AI tools such as ChatGPT, MidJourney, ElevenLabs, and D-ID. ChatGPT was used to generate an unedited script outlining key aspects of preoperative counseling for PN, which was then converted into an audio file and video using other AI platforms. The accuracy and quality of the AI-generated video were evaluated by 15 expert urologists using the DISCERN questionnaire, a validated tool for assessing the quality of health information. The results showed a mean DISCERN score of 53.1 out of 75, placing the PIV in the “Good” category, with 80% of urologists agreeing that the video was informative for patients and 73% finding it useful for counseling. While the AI-generated video was accurate, experts noted that it could be improved to make it more engaging and interactive for patients. Despite these minor improvements, the study highlights the potential of AI to create high-quality educational content at a low cost with minimal resources. The process used in this study can be applied to a wide range of medical procedures, suggesting the possibility of widespread adoption of AI-generated patient education tools in the future. Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of such tools on patient outcomes in the perioperative setting.
