Summary
This case study investigated the use of ultrasound as visual feedback in the remediation of the /ɹ/ sound. The study involved a Canadian English-speaking adolescent and included a baseline period with no treatment, alternating treatment blocks with and without ultrasound, and a final no-treatment period.
The results indicated that the participant showed improvement in the production of the /ɹ/ sound, especially after the introduction of ultrasound as a visual feedback tool. The use of ultrasound appeared to facilitate the acquisition of the /ɹ/ sound for the participant.
While this case study suggests the potential effectiveness of ultrasound in speech therapy for /ɹ/ remediation, the authors suggest that further large-scale studies are needed to evaluate its broader applicability and effectiveness.
