EDITORIAL COMMENT: ABBREVIATED BREAST MRI ON REPEAT—IS THIS A NEW ERA FOR BREAST CANCER SCREENING?
Breast imaging has continually evolved, with significant advancements like xeromammography, digital mammography, and now abbreviated breast MRI (AB-MRI). While mammography is currently recommended for screening, its sensitivity is low in dense breasts compared to MRI. AB-MRI, proposed as an alternative to routine MRI, shows high cancer detection rates, particularly in dense breasts. Although the frequency of repeat AB-MRI screenings is still unclear, studies indicate it maintains high detection rates. A survey found that a quarter of breast imaging professionals offer AB-MRI, and many women are willing to pay for it, highlighting the need for universal coverage.
