Hematoma Block Most Effective for Closed Forearm Fracture Reduction: A Retrospective Study

Discover how dynamic ultrasonography effectively distinguishes calcium pyrophosphate deposition in an 80-year-old woman with knee pain and swelling.

A study comparing anesthetic techniques for closed forearm fracture reduction found that hematoma block (HB) was the most efficient method, resulting in shorter emergency department (ED) length of stay (187.7 minutes) and lower costs than Bier’s block (BB) and procedural sedation (PS). While PS had the highest success rate for first-attempt reductions (94.4%), it also led to more complications (17.8%). The findings suggest HB or BB should be prioritized for fracture reductions in resource-limited EDs.
