Atherosclerosis burden and progression predict all-cause mortality

A study conducted by researchers at Mount Sinai Fuster Heart Hospital in New York, in collaboration with the CNIC in Madrid, has found that the burden and progression of atherosclerosis in asymptomatic individuals are independently associated with an increased risk of death from any cause. Published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the study followed over 5,700 adults for more than 12 years. It used advanced imaging techniques like vascular ultrasound and computed tomography to measure atherosclerotic plaques and artery calcification, showing that early detection and monitoring can significantly improve risk prediction and help prevent mortality.
