A review published in Meta-Radiology by researchers from the Chinese PLA General Hospital highlights the growing applications of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) for treating intracranial diseases. MRgFUS, approved by the FDA for essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease, is praised for its non-invasive nature and real-time monitoring capabilities. The review covers various applications, including treatments for obsessive-compulsive disorder, major depressive disorder, neuropathic pain, and focal dystonia. It also discusses ongoing research into low-intensity FUS for blood-brain barrier opening and neuromodulation, noting that while MRgFUS is effective, more studies are needed to fully understand its neurobiological effects.
