Penn Medicine, in partnership with community organizations and Siemens Healthineers, will host a free mammogram clinic and health fair from June 3 to June 14, 2024, to enhance access to healthcare for the West Philadelphia and Upper Darby communities. The initiative aims to provide breast cancer screenings without requiring insurance, utilizing a mobile mammography unit located at The Fresh Grocer parking lot, 421 S. 69th Street. Women aged 40 and older can receive state-of-the-art imaging services throughout the event. Additionally, a community health fair will take place on Sunday, June 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community of Compassion CDC, 6150 Cedar Avenue, featuring various health screenings, educational activities, and entertainment for all ages. Since its inception in 2021, the initiative has identified eight breast cancers among 654 screenings, underscoring the critical need for accessible healthcare in underserved areas. The health fair will offer screenings for other cancers and chronic health conditions, including take-home colon cancer screening kits and prostate-specific antigen tests. Attendees can enjoy free food, raffle prizes, and a special appearance by the Philadelphia 76ers as part of their Box Out Cancer initiative. This program is part of Penn Medicine’s commitment to improving health equity and reducing disparities in access to cancer screenings in communities that experience higher cancer mortality rates. “We aim to maximize ulcer-free, hospital-free, and activity-rich days for our patients,” said Dr. Carmen Guerra of the Abramson Cancer Center. This event represents a significant step towards empowering local communities to prioritize their health through accessible preventive care and education.
