Researchers are launching the STARshiP study, a large-scale trial involving 200,000 women to test a new screening method for pre-eclampsia, a condition affecting pregnant women and their unborn babies. Led by Saint Mary’s Managed Clinical Service in collaboration with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, The University of Manchester, and Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit, the study aims to improve early detection and prevention of pre-eclampsia. Funded by NIHR and sponsored by The University of Manchester, the trial will use a combined screening technique during early pregnancy scans and a blood test. High-risk individuals will receive aspirin treatment to reduce the condition’s incidence. The study will be implemented across participating hospitals using a stepped wedge clinical trial design.
