A new study led by Wynn Legon at Virginia Tech shows that low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) could reduce pain by targeting the brain’s insula region. Published in the journal PAIN, the research involved 23 participants, who experienced reduced pain perception after ultrasound was applied to their brain while heat-induced pain was triggered on their hands. The study found a small but meaningful reduction in pain, along with improved heart rate variability, which suggests broader health benefits. The findings offer a potential non-invasive alternative to pain management, reducing reliance on addictive opioids.
