MIT researchers have developed a new method for deep brain stimulation using ultrasound instead of electrical pulses. This technique, delivered by a hair-thin fiber, avoids the corrosion and scar tissue issues of traditional electrodes. In a mouse study, it successfully triggered dopamine release in a brain area targeted for Parkinson’s disease treatment. This approach, led by Professor Canan Dagdeviren and published in Nature Communications, offers a potentially safer and more navigable option for deep brain stimulation, while also serving as a valuable tool for brain research.
