POINT-OF-CARE ULTRASOUND IN GENERAL SURGERY RESIDENCY TRAINING

Summary

This journal article discusses the significant growth in the use of point-of-care ultrasound (US) in clinical settings, with surgeons expressing interest in its effective incorporation into their practice.

However, the current state of point-of-care US training in general surgery is deemed inadequate. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Milestones Project, designed to assess resident and fellow performance, currently lacks specific milestones for point-of-care US in general surgery, with emergency medicine being the only specialty with such a milestone.

The article outlines the successful implementation of a point-of-care US training program in a general surgery residency curriculum and advocates for the establishment of milestones in point-of-care US for all general surgery residents. Keywords include general surgery, milestones, and point-of-care ultrasound.
