The study aimed to determine the indications for using ultrasound in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and assess its impact on clinical management. A review of literature from 2000 to 2010 identified 58 articles from 32 countries, showing ultrasound was most frequently used for diagnosing obstetrical and intra-abdominal conditions. It led to changes in clinical management in over 30% of cases. The study concludes that ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool that should be essential in district medical facilities in LMICs, with potential for broader applications. Further research is needed to explore the effects of task shifting on its use.
