ULTRASOUND TRAINING IN LOW-MIDDLE INCOME COUNTRIES

The review aimed to evaluate ultrasound training opportunities for health workers in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A PubMed search identified relevant articles from 2000 to 2011. Results showed that most ultrasound scans are conducted by generalist and obstetric physicians or non-medical personnel with minimal training. Training ranged from informal to formal certification programs, including didactics and hands-on practice. Follow-up on trainee skills varied widely, and many programs did not meet WHO training criteria. However, some programs achieved excellent diagnostic accuracy and knowledge retention. The study concluded that regulation and quality control of ultrasound training in LMICs need improvement, and further research on effective training methods is essential.
